I’m having a lot of FEELINGS right now on how I think it’s really stupid that a lot of the time if I go to look up cosplay for stuff most of the things that have all the OMG THIS COSPLAY IS SO AMAZING comments are like… pretty photos that show less than 1/4 of the costume and are mostly facial…
This can vary; sometimes a closeup or cropped photo really can be beautiful from a photographic perspective, based on composition or atmosphere or just simple beauty. In those instances, though, I prefer to comment on the overall photo rather than the cosplayer. Generally I look for good photography that showcases a cosplay or cosplayer in an interesting or aesthetically pleasing way. If it’s just a bland closeup of someone pretty, that usually won’t stand out to me unless there’s good photography involved.
I’m picky about these things, lol. It is kind of a shame that cosplay seems to be more about aesthetics these days, but of course you and I know, from our interests in cosplay makeup etc., that looking your best obviously isn’t a bad thing! It’s a bummer when it seems like the face is more important than an entire costume these days and comments reflect that.
I’m split on the “tight close-up” thing. For some it translates “your cosplay is great” to “you’re attractive”, which does feel shallow in some cases. Not that you can’t take some impressive and evocative close-ups, but it does kinda make me blah when a “WORLD’S BEST COSPLAY” gallery is all headshots or myspace. Not that I don’t use those too - heck, sometimes at a con that’s the only angle you’re going to get that isn’t going to have a bad background visible.
As a photographer, I like to have close-ups in there, but it’s part of a package of multiple photos. Most of the people I shoot tend to want at least one good full-body shot as well, and there’s so many more fun things you can do with photos when you have a person and scenery to work with.
It’s so confusing when people change their user names on tumblr, twitter, facebook, etc. I mean, it doesn’t bother me but when it suddenly changes I have no idea who I’m following anymore!
Then I sit there like an idiot for a few minutes searching through their stuff.
Finally I see something that reminds me of who the hell they are.
Then I slowly start to get used to their new username.
One of the weird ways the net has changed. Before, someone changing their screenname was a rare event, and one that they’d make a dozen announcements before doing. Now people change names like they change pants.
